Back in the summer of 1999 Liz went looking online for some inspiring Hannah Hurnard
devotional writings like we have here. Instead what she found was some disturbing
information about Hannah's later life teachings potentially being New Age in philosophy,
including the denial of Grace with emphasis on personal works for salvation and
animals being capable of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We at The Christian Woman's
Page do not believe either of these concepts are Biblical.
Although Liz & I were greatly inspired by Hannah Hurnard's Hind's Feet in High
Places, we do not agree with the New Age teachings she taught years after writing
Hind's Feet. I feel Liz described the situation well in our original disclaimer:
[The situation] reminds me of John Wyeth who wrote the famous hymn, "Come Thou
Fount." He was saved and wrote beautiful songs to the Lord, but as one of the
verses in his song went: "…Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave
the God I love." I think that sums up what may have happened [to Hannah Hurnard]
and what can happen to each and everyone of us if we are not daily walking with
the Lord and in his Holy Word. Here is a woman that wrote a wonderful book which
has helped people in the struggles of life, but she could not see or refused to
see that she was wandering far from the Word.
We just want to make you aware that Ms. Hurnard's later works are no where near
what Hind's Feet is. As with anything, please be aware and be cautious that
what you believe is truth from Scripture.
